The story of In de Kroon
In October 1925, Banketbakkerij en Lunchroom In de Kroon was founded by Hubert and Heleen Smeets. This unique combination of pastry shop and lunchroom quickly made the business a well-known enterprise in the region. In 1963 their son Frans, together with his wife Agnes, took over. They extended the fame of In de Kroon far beyond the borders of Limburg.
The third generation, Frank Smeets and Anouk Nizet, took over in 1993. They too value quality and are happy to welcome customers to their beautifully renovated establishment. Hubert, Frank's grandfather, learned the trade in Brussels and worked seven days a week. He came from an entrepreneurial family, where Roermond's first water hotel was founded, a huge innovation for the time. During World War II, the family had to leave their home and hearth, after which everything had to be rebuilt.
Raised in the bakery, Frank learned his trade in places such as Den Bosch, Düsseldorf, Lucerne, Paris and Amsterdam. His father, Frans, considered it essential that Frank become a craftsman before taking over the business. Despite his doubts about the workload that the combination of pastry shop and lunchroom entailed, Frank has never regretted this choice.
Quality first
In de Kroon's assortment is constantly evolving, with special flavor combinations. The most popular products are the Christoffeltaart and vlaaien, with the Christoffeltaart being voted the best in the Netherlands three times. In 2016, Frank won the oliebollentest of Dagblad de Limburger, which resulted in many visitors, even from Grubbenvorst. The homemade veal ragout dishes, such as croquettes and pasties, are also very popular in the lunchroom.
At In de Kroon, quality is paramount. Frank takes pride in the fact that everything is prepared in-house, both in the pastry shop and in the lunchroom. Each recipe undergoes continuous improvement, where ingredients can always give a different taste.
Frank and his team regularly attend courses to learn and apply new techniques and products. This led, for example, to a special schnitzel for Christmas, made by an employee after a course, highlighting the team's pride.
