Safe swimming?
Check the water quality first
On a warm day, a swim in natural water is the perfect way to cool down. Hart van Limburg offers several official swimming locations. Before you head out, always check the latest water quality and safety information on Zwemwater.nl or in the Zwemwater app. That way, you'll know where it's safe to swim.
Swim only at official swimming locations
The swimming season runs from 1 May to 1 October. During this period, the water quality at official swimming locations is checked regularly. On Zwemwater.nl and on the information boards at each location, you can see whether there is a warning, a negative swimming advisory or a swimming ban. Always follow these instructions.
How to stay safe in the water
Even at an officially monitored swimming location, it's important to stay alert. These tips will help you reduce the risks:
- Never swim alone.
- Stay away from bridges, locks and shipping routes.
- Do not dive into shallow or murky water.
- Do not enter the water if you see dead animals, surface scum or unusual discolouration.
- Be aware of cold water, currents and sudden changes in depth.
- Follow the instructions on the information boards at the swimming location.
After your swim
Take a shower after swimming. If there isn't one nearby, wash your hands before eating. If you experience a skin rash, nausea, diarrhoea or other health complaints after swimming, contact a doctor if the symptoms are severe or persist.
Before packing your swimming gear, check the swimming location on Zwemwater.nl (only in Dutch). That way, you'll be well prepared and can enjoy a safe day by the water.
