The walking route of over 8 kilometers starts near the church. Opposite the church you walk to a low spot: Mooi Buggenum. Before the flood protection measures were implemented, this hollow filled with water at almost every high tide of the Meuse. In 1993 and 1995 the water rose to about 1 meter high in the houses on the Dorpsstraat. The water caused enormous damage.
Further along the route you will pass through the new housing estate Galgenberg. On this spot, in times gone by, disobedient Buggenummers were publicly executed. You walk through the built-up area and the route continues through the Buggenumseveld towards Neer. Here you can enjoy the beautiful open view over the neighboring village and the countryside.
At junction 72 you follow the path between the green hedges to junction 70. The path is part of a unique network of escape paths. The paths are located on the higher parts of the village and were used as 'traffic arteries' at times when the lower streets were flooded.
At the end of the route, take a walk inside St. Aldegundis. It is said that she, among other things, can do something for you when you suffer from headaches or sore throats and she is also invoked for protection against cancer.
