Mill Sint Jan: for centuries a beacon in Weerterland
With a rich history dating back hundreds of years, Molen Sint Jan is the oldest authentic windmill in Weerterland. The current mill, built in 1783, was relocated in 1804 on the outskirts of the village of Stramproy. Before that time, the mill stood in another location, further away from the village.
In 1898, the mill came into the hands of the Maes family of brewers from Stramproy. Three years later, in 1901, Hubert van de Winkel joined the mill as miller. In 1918, Lei van de Winkel took over the mill from his father. The bronze statue standing next to the mill is a tribute to Lei "the Mulder."
In order to put the mill on the wind, an action called "kruien" in trade language, the miller must turn the complete mill house. This mill house rests on a heavy, wooden vertical shaft.
