Arcen has been linked to the Meuse since the fourteenth century. That’s when Arcen castle became a major harbour with the right to toll passing ships. Moreover, merchants had to offload their goods, offer them for sale and only then could they sail on. This right of staple was a lucrative business. An architectural historian recently investigated the gatehouse and discovered an upper storey with an attic.
